Phytoremediation

BHE Environmental is active in the development of plant-based technologies to remediate groundwater, leachate, and soil. Our biologists, wetland scientists, civil and chemical engineers, hydro geologists, and geologists are uniquely qualified and experienced in phytoremediation, specially applied to reducing pollutant loads from landfill leachates and stormwater runoff from disposal areas and manufacturing facilities.

Phytoremediation uses plants to clean up pollution by providing a means of "taking up" certain pollutants, including metals, pesticides, explosives, oil, and other organic compounds. Plants may then be harvested, effectively removing contaminates contained in the plant material. Plants may also be used to prevent wind, rain, and groundwater from transporting chemical constituents offsite. We also function in alternative landfill cap design by using trees to minimize infiltration and leachate volume.
